Blue Jackets goaltender Elvis Merzlikins was on the verge of tears on the bench after he and the Blue Jackets lost in stunning fashion to the New York Islanders.

The Columbus Blue Jackets lost in stunning fashion yesterday to the New York Islanders, who scored twice in the final minute to steal victory from the jaws of defeat and deal Columbus a crushing defeat.
Matthew Schaefer, the 1st overall pick by the Islanders in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, and Simon Holmstrom scored 29 seconds apart in the game's final minute, reversing what was a 2-1 Blue Jackets lead.
After the game and after Blue Jackets goalie Elvis Merzlikins shed his equipment, he was back on the bench and was seen on the verge of tears after the painful loss.
Merzlikins has been an emotional goaltender throughout his career and it's clear that he's bothered by the lack of success that he and the Blue Jackets as a team have experienced during his time in the NHL.

The Blue Jackets Said It's A Shame They Lost Like That

Merzlikins was visibly angry after the go-ahead goal, as he smashed his stick over the crossbar.
Teammate Charlie Coyle, playing in his 1st year with the Blue Jackets, said it was a shame for his team to lose like that and said Merzlikins gave them every chance to win the game.
It's a shame. A guy who plays like that, gives us a chance to win a hockey game, save after save, he deserves better and we want to come back in the next game and play the right way and fix things. You never want to leave him like that, especially when you have a goalie who stands on his head like he did tonight. It shouldn't be that way. - Charlie Coyle

Merzlikins deserved a better fate after making 36 saves.
