Connor McDavid breaks his silence on refereeing nightmare vs. Czechia: 'I'm upset'
Team Canada almost lost against Czechia after a blatant missed call, and now Connor McDavid has revealed how upset he and the team were after the play.
While there were some dominant performances in the group stage of the 2026 Olympic Games, with the return to best-on-best action, many were expecting drama, late comebacks and breathtaking games.
That's exactly what we got on Wednesday when Team Canada were forced to come back not once, but twice against Czechia as Mitch Marner ended up finishing things with a beautiful, dramatic overtime winner for Team Canada.
However, the IIHF was left with a major embarrassment, as Czechia's last goal came with at least six men on the ice, a missed call that could have robbed Canada of a chance at gold in the return to best-on-best hockey at the Olympics.
Connor McDavid opens up on the controversial missed call
Unsurprisingly, Team Canada players were asked for comments about it after they escaped with the quarterfinal win, with Connor McDavid clearly not too happy that this call was missed by the officials.
I’m upset we didn’t see it either but everybody’s on the bench watching the game and none of us saw it so refs didn’t see it, nobody saw it seemed like, Glad that it didn’t cost us our tournament, with that being said we definitely gotta be more aware of what’s going on out there.
Unsurprisingly, as a leader, McDavid was also frustrated that no one on the Canadian bench saw it, but given that it got past the officials too, the players were clearly too focused on the situation at hand to have seen it.
As he mentions though, all's well that ends well, with Canada booking their spot against Finland in the semifinals as their chances to win gold remain very much alive moving forward.
