Sidney Crosby injury may force Team Canada into major change
Sidney Crosby went down against Czechia, and if he misses Team Canada's semifinal against Finland, the team will be forced into a major change.
Team Canada were lucky to escape with a win in their quarterfinals matchup against Czechia on Wednesday, and now, they've got another massive contest looming against Finland in the semifinal, with a potential showdown against the United States in a gold medal matchup.
That game won't be any easier for the Canadians, and it will get much, much harder if Sidney Crosby misses that one after departing their quarterfinal with what looked to be a very scary injury.
A new captain Canada?
While many are hopeful that Crosby could return against Finland, if he does miss the game, it would mean some big time changes for Canada, who haven't played without Crosby at a best-on-best tournament since 2006.
It would also force them into another big change per Pierre LeBrun, as international rules require a team to have someone wearing the 'C', with the obvious candidate being Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid, who is currently wearing an 'A' for Team Canada.
Crosby has been the only player to wear the 'C' for Canada in over a decade; and changing that would be divisive.
The other 'A' is worn by Colorado Avalanche star Cale Makar, but given that McDavid leads his team in the NHL, he would be the candidate that most expect to step up if this were to occur.
Obviously, Team Canada and all their fans will be praying that No. 87 can get back in time for their semifinal matchup, and while McDavid would be a fine replacement, losing Crosby would be a major blow for this squad, especially after his red-hot start to the tournament in the group stages.
