The Edmonton Oilers are looking to get back to the Stanley Cup Finals for the third time in three years, and during the break, they've brought back Paul Coffey.
The past few seasons have brought immense success for Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers, but unfortunately, they're yet to take the final step towards Stanley Cup success despite the immense star power leading the way.
In that time, they've made plenty of changes both on and off the ice, with Stan Bowman replacing Ken Holland as General Manager, while Kris Knoblauch has taken over behind the bench, with some other changes made to the coaching staff.
Paul Coffey returns to the Oilers coaching staff
After running the Oilers defense as an assistant for several years, Paul Coffey stepped away in July of 2025, instead taking a role in the Oilers front office as he looked to make that full-time transition.
However, on Wednesday, the team officially announced on social media that Coffey is instead back on the bench, taking a role as an assistant coach for his beloved Oilers once more.
This comes after some major struggles for the Oilers defense, with the team taking a major step back despite some improvements to their roster since their second straight defeat at the hands of the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Several Oilers are currently in Milan for the 2026 Olympic Games, but when they get back, they'll see another very familiar face in Coffey behind the bench once again, with the hopes that he can spark this team ahead of what could be another big run in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
