Renaud Lavoie confirms the Montreal Canadiens have eyes on Nazem Kadri, but the veteran's massive contract remains a major hurdle for Kent Hughes.
The rumour mill is grinding again in Montreal.
And this time, the target is a name that usually lights up the Bell Centre for all the wrong reasons.
Nazem Kadri was drafted 7th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs back in 2009.
He’s been a cup winner and a legendary pest throughout his long career.
But the Calgary Flames veteran is 35 years old now.
And he's carrying a contract that could easily choke a rebuilding roster.
Montreal Canadiens Face Massive Risk With Calgary Flames Veteran
He has already put up 10 goals and 39 points in 56 games so far this season.
He’s still a motor on the ice.
But he’s also a staggering -24 on the year.
For a guy with a $7M cap hit, he really needs to earn his paycheck.
Calgary is desperate to move that big ticket as they look toward their own future.
Yet, the Canadiens are finally seeing their young core take shape.
Trading for a veteran who is signed until he’s 38 feels like a massive step backward.
Kent Hughes has been smart so far.
Lavoie says this move would be unwise, and it’s hard to disagree with that logic.
