Elliotte Friedman has shed new light on why a potential Elias Pettersson trade between the Vancouver Canucks and Carolina Hurricanes never came together.

According to the Sportsnet insider, the Canucks were not sold on Jesperi Kotkaniemi as the centrepiece of a return.
Friedman shared the detail on the November 2 episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, where he also praised Kotkaniemi's improved play. This is context on past discussions, not confirmation that the two clubs have restarted talks.

Why Kotkaniemi Does Not Move the Needle in Vancouver

The gap in value is easy to see. Pettersson is Vancouver's top centre, signed through 2031-32 at an $11.6 million cap hit, and he has 18 points in 17 games this season. Kotkaniemi has four goals and seven points in 15 games with a $4.82 million cap hit through 2029-30.
Swapping the two would add roughly $6.78 million to Carolina's cap, but the money is only part of the story. The Canucks would be moving their leading scorer, so any return would need high-end talent and long-term value, not just a middle-six forward and some cap relief.
Both players also carry protection. Pettersson holds a no-movement clause, while Kotkaniemi has a 10-team no-trade list, which adds another layer of difficulty to any potential deal.

What Comes Next for the Canucks and Hurricanes

Vancouver now faces a strategic choice: build around Pettersson during a difficult season, or find out whether another club will pay a genuine premium. His strong start means there is little pressure to accept a package the front office views as light.
Carolina has its own decision to make. The Hurricanes must decide whether a higher-priced centre is worth surrendering prospects, picks and flexibility.
With Kotkaniemi playing with more confidence, keeping him may look more appealing than moving him.
The next real signal would be fresh reporting that talks have resumed, or that Pettersson would consider waiving his clause.
Until then, this is a look back at a negotiation that stalled, not an imminent blockbuster for either franchise.
