Canucks and Rangers linked in blockbuster trade after proposal goes viral online

The Vancouver Canucks cannot accept the shape of it.

The idea moves Braden Schneider and Urho Vaakanainen west, with DeBrusk and Victor Mancini heading to Manhattan.

The debate has focused entirely on hockey fit. The Vancouver Canucks are not currently solving for hockey fit.

Patrick Johnston of The Province reported that Canucks ownership wants player payroll cut by roughly $20 million, with about $12 million already gone.

That leaves general manager Ryan Johnson roughly $8 million still to find.

Schneider just signed a one-year, $5.5 million contract on July 13. DeBrusk carries $5.5 million.

Swapping them saves nothing, and adding Vaakanainen's salary pushes Vancouver the wrong direction entirely.

That is why nearly every DeBrusk mock trade collapses before it starts. Money has to leave, not arrive.

His contract includes full no-movement protection, so he decides which destinations exist.

Vancouver cannot manufacture a bidding war against a veto.

There is also a production question few pitches address.

DeBrusk scored 23 goals last season, but only four came at even strength.

The 29-year-old finished with 42 points in 81 games, with the even-strength total the harder number to explain away.

Chris Drury has already added Pavel Dorofeyev, Oliver Bjorkstrand and Marcus Pettersson in New York.

Another power-play-dependent winger at $5.5 million through 2031 is not obviously the missing piece for Mike Sullivan.

The realistic version is quieter.

Vancouver waits for March, when contenders emerge and DeBrusk widens his own list.

The deadline falls on March 5.

Until then, the trade board belongs to the player, not the mock drafters.
