Unexpected new team emerges in the Dylan Larkin sweepstakes

The obstacle nobody is pricing in is not cap space or trade cost - it is the 2026-27 calendar.

Larkin requested a trade out of Detroit in early June, first reported by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

He turns 30 this week and is coming off 34 goals and 33 assists in 74 games.

His original list was Florida, Minnesota and Vegas, with Dallas added in July, per MLive's Ansar Khan. Philadelphia was never on it.

The situation may now be changing.

The Detroit Red Wings also lack a permanent decision-maker to say yes. Steve Yzerman stepped down as general manager on July 15 and shifted to senior advisor, staying on day-to-day only until a new head of hockey operations is hired.

Read that title carefully. That executive then shapes the general manager's chair, which makes this two hires, not one.

The NHL expands to an 84-game season this year. Opening night moves up to Sept. 29, training camps shrink to roughly ten days, and teams play only four exhibition games.

That erases the runway. A new Detroit executive would have to arrive, evaluate the roster and move a captain signed through 2030-31 at $8.7 million in a window two weeks shorter than normal.

Detroit hosts the New York Rangers on Oct. 2. Larkin is likely to be standing there.

Every week Detroit spends interviewing is a week the Flyers gain. Danny Briere finished his summer with room left over after re-signing Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale, while Florida and Vegas are squeezed.

In-season trades reward teams with space, not teams with preference. Larkin's list can expand once he has played thirty games for a rebuilding club under an executive he did not choose.

Philadelphia cannot force that. It can only be the team still standing when it happens.
