Wayne Gretzky, the greatest player in NHL history, has found himself at the center of a multi-million dollar lawsuit.
Wayne Gretzky is suing former business partner Veera Mahajan for filing an allegedly meritless lawsuit against him in 2022.
According to The New York Post, Mahajan invested in a weight loss gum known as "OMG", which was supposed to curb appetite and help users lose weight; Gretzky's wife Janet was a spokesperson for the company.
Mahajan sued Gretzky for unspecified damages and accused him of falsehoods about losing weight. Her lawsuit stated that Gretzky lied about losing 35 pounds after using the gum, and said that he even later admitted to lying and that it led to the end of the company.
However, Mahajan reportedly filed to dismiss the case last year.
Gretzky denied lying about the weight loss and claimed Mahajan only filed the lawsuit because she thought Gretzky would quickly settle «for millions in order to avoid potential negative publicity,» according to the report.
He is suing her for malicious prosecution and seeking unspecified damages.
The lawsuit was reportedly filed in Los Angeles County this week.
Gretzky is not in the clear with «OMG,» however.
The company's founder, Steven Sparks, sued Gretzky with similar allegations as Mahajan just days before she filed her lawsuit.
That lawsuit remains ongoing.
Gretzky is the NHL's all-time leader in goals, assists and points. But his goal scoring record is on the verge of being broken by future Hall of Fame captain of the Washington Capitals, Alex Ovechkin.
The Russian superstar is now less than ten goals away from tying Gretzky's all-time record of 894 NHL goals.
