Carter King is one of the top college free agents that is set to become available, and now, he's been linked to his home town Canadian team.

Carter King has spent the last four years at the Unversity of Denver, and as the teams captain and a consistent producer, he's going to have plenty of suitors once he becomes a free agent.
Now, top NHL Insider Frank Seravalli has linked King, a Calgary native to his hometown team the Calgary Flames, who are desperate for depth down the middle and future stars at the centre position.
He may well be King of the Class of undrafted free agents for 2025. The two-time NCAA national champion at Denver is also team captain. King checks so many boxes - and what he might lack in size (5-foot-10), he makes up for in compete, character and class. King is a consistent scorer, setting a new career-high in goals (18) at Denver, where he's also been nominated for NCHC defensive forward of the year. It sounds like the Calgary Flames are one team interested in the Calgary kid. He's already 23, so he could only sign a one-year, entry-level deal.

At 23-years of age, King has plenty of experience against top level competition, so he's likely looking to sign a deal where he can compete for an NHL spot now, or at the very least in 2025/26, and with this being the current Flames depth chart at centre in the NHL (Nazem Kadri, Morgan Frost, Mikael Backlund, Kevin Rooney), he's got a chance.
In 37 and 38 games over the past two seasons, King has posted 34 points and 36 points while carrying a combined +22 differential, all while being a leader that helped this team to the NCAA Tournament win in 2024, making him very valuable in many ways.
Ultimately, King may have plenty of suitors when he becomes available to talk to NHL teams, but given that the Flames are his hometown team and have a lack of centre depth that he could take advantage of, this may be the best move for his career.
