Award-winning Ontario hockey player Dawson Abrahams passes away at 22

The St. Catharines, Ontario forward died unexpectedly last week. His family says he passed peacefully in his sleep, and no cause has been made public.

The Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League issued a statement naming both the Pelham Panthers and the Redeemer Royals.

Junior leagues rarely speak for alumni who have already moved on. That the GOJHL did says something about how long Abrahams stayed in people's memory after he left.

Abrahams put up 10 goals and 27 points in 18 games for Redeemer University in Ancaster, taking Men's Hockey Rookie of the Year as an assistant captain.

Those numbers came after three seasons in Pelham, where he also wore a letter, plus stops with the St. Catharines Falcons, Niagara North Stars, Southern Tier Admirals and Welland Jr. Canadians.

He was studying Physical Education, and told recruiters years earlier he wanted to work in athletic therapy.

Hockey was never the whole file.

Abrahams led Bible studies, spent time with Portantorchas in Costa Rica, and worked summers at Camp Crossroads.

His family says the camp meant a great deal to him, and that he spent his final days there.

They have asked that donations go to Camp Crossroads rather than flowers.

Visitation is set for Friday, July 31 at Central Community in Niagara-on-the-Lake, with a service Saturday, August 1.

Redeemer's award will sit in a record book.

The camp is where the people who knew him will look for him.
