A new report has placed Senators forward Drake Batherson's future in Ottawa in doubt after reported failed extension talks throughout the offseason.

The Ottawa Senators underwent a frustrating offseason after captain Brady Tkachuk requested a trade away from the team.
The Senators granted his request Brady to the Florida Panthers where he will join his older brother Matthew Tkachuk.
Now, with Tkachuk already gone the Senators are at risk of losing another star forward in his prime after struggling to agree to an extension with Drake Batherson.

According to a report from Bruce Garrioch there is a large gap between the Senators and Batherson in contract negotiations.
The Ottawa Senators reportedly "aren't close" to a contract extension with Drake Batherson, per Bruce Garrioch.

Batherson, 28, enjoyed a breakout season in 2025-26 scoring 30 goals for the first time in his career while also eclipsing the 70 point mark for the first time as well.
With Batherson peaking at the right time he is looking to cash in with a contract north of 10 million dollars per season.
There's growing belief around the league that Batherson could command $10M+ AAV if he reaches free agency.
While there is still plenty of time for Batherson and the Senators to come to an agreement the track record of Ottawa being unable to keep homegrown talent is extensive.
If the Senators are unable to extend Batherson, then they could be looking at a full blow rebuild which would lead to further trades involving Thomas Chabot and potentially even Jake Sanderson and Tim Stutzle.
As more information is provided on Batherson's future in Ottawa and beyond we will pass along the latest details.
