Before the Los Angeles Kings traded Phillip Danault to the Montreal Canadiens, there was reportedly an offer from the Carolina Hurricanes per analyst David Pagnotta.
The Phillip Danault era with the Los Angeles Kings is over, as he was traded to the Montreal Canadiens for a second round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft. But per a new report, there was another offer they were considering before deciding to go in a different direction.
Per NHL analyst David Pagnotta, the Kings turned down another offer by Carolina for Phillip Danault that included Jesperi Kotkaniemi.
They said, 'You know what? Let's go in a different direction.' We don't like the term, I don't think it was the money that was an issue, it was more term. And they just didn't want to have four more years of what Kotkaniemi could be with his game still relatively undefined for what he brings. Is he a second line guy? He's more of a third line guy right now.
So they went the pick route, you free up the cap space, you have $9-10 million in cap space now, and an extra second round pick, and they can move with it. - David Pagnotta

Danault has been struggling offensively this year with just five assists.
The Los Angeles Kings Traded Phillip Danault To The Montreal Canadiens
This will be the second tenure in the NHL career of Danault in a Habs sweater, with whom he played and even helped bring to the 2021 Stanley Cup Final before signing a six year deal with the Kings.
The Canadiens got extra depth with a player that they are already familiar with, and the Kings shed some salary cap space.
