Even people who don't follow hockey know the number 99 symbolizes the Great One. Wayne Gretzky made such an impact on this league that his jersey number was retired not just in Edmonton, LA, St.Louis and the New York Rangers where he played, but it was retired league wide! Gretzky retired with 2857 points in 1487 games. Something crazy to think about is you could take away every goal Gretzky ever scored (894) and he would still lead the league in points all time. Insane.
We all know that Gretzky's idol was Gordie Howe, who wore #9, but on this latest episode of Spittin' Chiclets we learn why he chose #99.
