Daemon Hunt of the Wild and Jack St. Ivany of the Jets are on waivers Friday, and St. Ivany is a former Penguins defenseman traded to Winnipeg in June.
Two NHL defensemen are officially on the waiver wire today.
Minnesota Wild blueliner Daemon Hunt and Winnipeg Jets defenseman Jack St. Ivany both landed there Friday, and teams around the league now have a chance to scoop them up.
Yesterday, the players who were on waivers all cleared, so these two will be worth watching.
What to know about Hunt
Hunt is 24 and was a third round pick of the Wild in 2020.
He returned to Minnesota last October when the Wild claimed him off waivers from Columbus.
The Blue Jackets got him in the November 2024 deal that sent David Jiricek to the Wild, but he never played a game for them.
Hunt re-signed in July on a one-year contract worth $900,000 and played 32 regular season games and five playoff games for Minnesota last season.
A Penguins past for St. Ivany
St. Ivany is the one with the Pittsburgh connection.
The 27-year-old spent parts of three seasons with the Penguins, collecting nine assists in 53 games before Winnipeg acquired him in June for forward David Gustafsson.
Philadelphia drafted him in the fourth round in 2018, but he signed with Pittsburgh as a college free agent in 2022.
He carries an $850,000 cap hit and is headed toward unrestricted free agency after this season.
He was also projected to sit out Tuesday's game against the Blues, so his role in Winnipeg has been small.
Both are depth defensemen on inexpensive deals, the kind of player contenders sometimes look at when injuries hit.
Now it's a waiting game to see if another team makes a call.
