The Devils and Jets are working on a Connor Hellebuyck trade, Elliotte Friedman reports, and the goalie's suspension is set to end today.
Update: the trade is official.
The Connor Hellebuyck saga might finally be heading somewhere.
Elliotte Friedman reports that the New Jersey Devils and Winnipeg Jets are working on a deal for the star goaltender, and the timing is hard to ignore.
Friedman shared the news Friday morning and kept it short, adding only that everyone will have to wait and see what develops.
Hellebuyck asked for a trade in the offseason and made it public on Aug. 27.
He then skipped training camp, and the Jets suspended him on Sept. 16.
That suspension is reportedly set to end today, Oct. 23, so this report lands right on the deadline.
Why New Jersey makes sense
Hellebuyck won both the Hart and Vezina trophies in 2024-25, and he helped Team USA win gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
A move to the Devils would also put him back alongside his Team USA teammate Jack Hughes.
He's 33 now, and the contract is a big one.
It's a seven-year, $59.5 million deal that carries an $8.5 million cap hit through 2030-31.
It also includes a full no-movement clause this season, which means Hellebuyck has to approve any destination.
What to watch next
Last season was rough by his standards.
Hellebuyck went 23-23-11 with a .895 save percentage in 57 games, and the Jets missed the playoffs.
Some people will see that as a red flag.
Others will see a goalie who could bounce back on a stronger team.
Nothing is official yet, and no return for Winnipeg has been reported.
Buffalo, Carolina and Utah were all tied to Hellebuyck in recent weeks, so seeing New Jersey show up now is a bit of a surprise.
Stay tuned, because this one could move fast.
