While everyone feels like the Montreal Canadiens are planning on entering a full rebuild, it does seem as though that might not be the case. When Jeff Gorton was hired many fans assumed his role would be to tear down the roster and rebuild it. Today though during an episode of TSN's Insider Trading Pierre LeBrun revealed the following

I'm told the Habs intend to be pretty aggressive in free agency [...] they hope to be a player. While they want to get younger in some parts, thet want to lure a star or two as part of this roster transformation.

There are many interesting names on the free agent market this summer including both Patrice Bergeron and Kris Letang, who were both previously clients of Kent Hughes, the new Habs GM. There is also speculation that the target of the Canadiens could be Patrik Laine, currently of the Columbus Blue Jackets, especially if he goes unqualified as a restricted free agent.
It will be very interesting to see how the Canadiens proceed. There has also been reports that the Habs are very interested in Ilya Samsonov of the Washington Capitals.
