The Edmonton Oilers couldn't have scripted a worse start to the 2023-24 season, and after years at the helm, Head Coach Jay Woodcroft was officially relieved of his duties over the weekend.
While the Oilers have been struggling on the ice, captain Connor McDavid seemed confident the players could figure it out, but after waking up to a text revealing the coaching change, it appears it's truly effecting him.
According to TSN's Ryan Rishaug, McDavid looked 'shell-shocked' at practice after the coaching change, with both he and Leon Draisaitl taking the news particularly hard.
Despite being 3-9-1 through 13 games on the season, the Oilers are still within striking distance of a playoff spot, so if the teams biggest stars can lead the turnaround, there's time for them to get back into the hunt.
Ultimately though, with just a few years remaining on McDavid and Draisaitl's contracts this is the last thing Oilers fans want to hear, as the team can't risk losing their captain and biggest star, so the fans and players will all be hoping things can change under new leadership.
