Finland is one of the only countries in the world who still requires male citizens age 18-28 to perform some form of military service. Often for athletes this services isn't a rigorous, but it's still required. Citizens have the option of differing their military service, but it must be completed.

Blue Jackets goalie, Joonas Korpisalo, shared some information this week about his military service, or in this case lack thereof.

"The law says that every guy must do it,» Korpisalo said. «It's a law. I've been moving it since I was 18 because I never wanted to miss my summer practice time. But now I'm hitting the deadline.»

Korpisalo was asked if he was willing to leave during the season to complete his military commitments.

«No, I wouldn't do that,» he said. «If they want to come get me, come get me. I'm not leaving during my season. I don't think Lauri Markkanen is, either. I don't think he's going to leave the team for that. There would have to be a special arrangement."

Markkanen is another Finnish goalie in the Jackets organization who has yet to complete his military commitments.

The big problem for Korpisalo though is even if he began his military commitment as soon as his season ended, he'd still be unable to complete his service before the beginning of the 2022-2023 season. This becomes particularly interesting as Korpisalo is an unrestricted free agent and would likely be looking to start a season with his new team.
