The Washington Capitals are fighting for their playoff lives right now, but some things are much bigger than hockey.
Yesterday it was announced that Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin was taking some time away from the team for personal reasons. It was announced that he was something wrong with a family member and we have now learned the truth.
Ovechkin himself posted on his social media page today that he has lost his father Mikhail Ovechkin.
Today I lost my father ... I thank everyone for the support but please be understanding and do not disturb my family in this difficult time for us! Thank you
Ovechkin is a true family man. He enjoys having his kids involved in every aspect of his life and his parents were the same way with him. Both his parent were professional athletes, his mom was a professional basketball player and his father was a high level soccer player. His family spent quite a few years with him in Washington when he first joined the Capitals and his mom even negotiated his first big contract.
Family is very important to Ovechkin and this is something that is going to be very tough on him.
Alex with your career as a player and just as a person, I think we can all agree that you definitely made your father proud.
