A Quinn Hughes blockbuster would change the Toronto Maple Leafs overnight, and this proposal hands Minnesota a package that is hard to dismiss. Toronto would acquire Hughes with an extension attached.
The Wild would receive Easton Cowan, Ben Danford, Oliver Ekman-Larsson and a 2027 Colorado first-round pick.
Why Toronto Makes the Move
Hughes is the elite puck mover the Leafs have lacked on the back end. Minnesota gave up Marco Rossi, Zeev Buium, Liam Öhgren and a 2026 first-round pick to land him, so the Wild clearly see him as a cornerstone. Still, he is entering the final year of a deal that carries a $7.85 million cap hit, and he remains unsigned beyond this season.
Building the extension into the trade gives Toronto the certainty Minnesota has not been able to secure.
The price is steep. Cowan, a 2023 first-round pick, is one of the organization's top prospects. Danford, taken 31st in 2024, is a defense-first blueliner with a 6-foot-2 frame.
Ekman-Larsson is signed through 2027-28 at $3.5 million and owns a 16-team no-trade list, so his approval would be required.
What Minnesota Gets Back
The Wild would walk away with a young forward, a young defenseman, a veteran who won a Stanley Cup in 2024, and a Colorado pick that originated in the Nicolas Roy trade.
That pick is conditional, converting into an unprotected 2028 first if Colorado lands in the top 10 of the 2027 draft.
From the Wild's perspective, this is about protecting value. Guerin paid heavily to build a win-now roster, and Hughes can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2027 if no deal gets done.
Moving him now would return a younger core and avoid losing him for nothing, but it would also mean admitting the December gamble ended early.
For Toronto, the math is simple. A franchise defenseman rarely hits the market, and the Leafs would be paying in prospects and a veteran instead of long-term core pieces.
The risk is the extension price, since Hughes is expected to ask for more than Cale Makar's $20.4 million.
