What once seemed like an un-moveable contract now seems completely moveable as Erik Karlsson has dipped his body into the fountain of youth and has become his old elite defenceman self that won multiple Norris trophies with the Ottawa Senators.
Karlsson has been an absolute monster this season and is currently tied for 4th place in league scoring with 73 points in 54 games. He is only 9 points away from his career high and is running away with the Norris trophy conversations with year.
At 32 years old, Karlsson still has 4 more seasons after this year on a contract that carries a cap hit of $11,500,000. This contract is the main reason he is still in San Jose as it's been basically un-moveable.
Now with his re-emergence as a top tier defenceman though, teams are very interested in bringing in this superstar and it's been reported that the Sharks are also willing to retain salary.
Of the team interested in Karlsson's services, the Edmonton Oilers are thought to be the frontrunner, and they are apparently offering a lot.
Radio Analyst for the Edmonton Oilers Bob Stauffer shared what he thinks the offer is from Edmonton for Karlsson:
the Oilers offer for Erik Karlsson would be their 2023 1st, defensemen
Evan Bouchard, prospect
Xavier Bourgault (as the 3 1sts) and two contracts,
Tyson Barrie to balance out the numbers and another roster player.
Karlsson has played with some good players in San Jose and Ottawa, but getting the chance to pass the puck to
Connor McDavid, we could see some point totals by a defenceman that haven't been seen in decades.
