The 2023 National Hockey League trade deadline is only a few short weeks away and at risk of their player getting injured and not being able to trade them, it looks like teams are starting trade talks early this year.
Many teams believe they are capable of winning the Stanley Cup this year, but are missing maybe one piece to push them over the edge, and it looks like some of these contenders believe Timo Meier is that piece.
Last season, Meier set a career high in goals (35) and points (76) and this season he is on pace to smash that goal record, as he is currently on pace to score 45 this season.
Meier is a RFA at the end of this season, and has a qualifying offer of $10,000,000, which will not be possible for some teams to extend, but there is a possibility of a trade in the offseason. It is rumoured that the Maple Leafs are interested in his services and would then trade him in the offseason to avoid the $10,000,000 cap hit next season.
While the Leafs, Golden Knights and Hurricanes all could use his services right now, they wouldn't be able to hold onto him long term, while the New Jersey Devils could definitely afford his services for the future.
