Wayne Gretzky Calls Out Reporter's Mistake After Alex Ovechkin Ties His NHL Goal Record

This entire NHL season has almost been completely focused on Alex Ovechkin, who is now tied with Wayne Gretzky for most goals in an NHL season, set to break a record that many once believed to be untouchable.

On Friday, Ovechkin potted two against the Chicago Blackhawks, and while he's yet to pass the record, he was showered with love and adulation by the fans in Washington D.C. and his teammates that have been along for the incredible ride that 2024/25 has been.

However, it's the point that he's yet to pass the record that Gretzky brought up in hilarious fashion in the joint press conference that was held after the game, with The Great One wanting a reporter to know that he's still got at least 24 hours with a share of the record.

This was clearly the Great One just having some fun with a reporter, as he's likely known for some time that his place in this specific part in NHL history would be passed over, and the entire group of reporters and Ovechkin in attendance had a great laugh at the moment.

This all comes on the back of an incredible season from Ovechkin, who has now tallied 41 goals in a season where he broke his leg, and if it wasn't for that plus a COVID shortened season and a lockout when he was meant to debut, we'd likely have been here a few years ago.

Ultimately though, Ovechkin has been a stellar ambassador for the NHL over the years and now he's on the verge of history, and while Gretzky can keep having fun with it, he knows that in New York on Sunday, The Great 8 is likely to pass his incredible record.
