With two goals tonight Alex Ovechkin has officially tied Wayne Gretzky for the most goals in a career with 894.
Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals are hosting the Chicago Blackhawks tonight as the great eight chases the great one's all-time goal record.
Coming into the game, Ovechkin was behind Gretzky by just two goals and needed a hat trick to claim the record outright.
While the game is still ongoing, he has secured the first two goals needed, tying Gretzky with 894 goals in his career.
Moments before his second goal of the game, Ovechkin thought he had tied the record, but it was actually a Blackhawks player who put the puck in his own net after a rebound off a shot from
Dylan Strome.
Luckily, that did not matter as Ovechkin struck on the powerplay just moments later recording his 41st goal of the season at age 39 and career goal number 894.
After scoring the historic goal, Ovechkin could be seen skating over to the glass where his family was sitting, high-fiving his son through the glass in what will surly be a special moment for both of them.
Ovechkin still has half a period left in the game to complete the hat trick and break the record and you know his teammates are going to look for him down the stretch, especially late in the game should the Blackhawks end up in an empty-net situation.
Be sure to tune in to see if Ovechkin can complete the historic milestone tonight or if we will have to wait one more game to witness history.
