Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman addressed the situation on his podcast, floating the idea that Winnipeg's interest in Carolina defenseman Alexander Nikishin might not be the whole story.

According to Friedman, the Jets could be exploring a broader structure that pulls in a third club entirely.

Nikishin, a restricted free agent who helped anchor Carolina's blue line, has been floated as trade bait for weeks. If Winnipeg genuinely has no appetite for adding him directly, the logic follows that Carolina would need to route him elsewhere while sending a different package to the Jets for Hellebuyck.

Multiple clubs have already been tied to the goaltender this offseason, giving Winnipeg leverage to shop around for the best combination of picks and players rather than settling for the first offer on the table.
