In one of the most spectacular moments in hockey this year, Alexander Ovechkin has now tied Wayne Gretzky's all-time NHL goal record of 894.

Wayne Gretzky had begun travelling with the Capitals to watch as Alex Ovechkin cements himself into NHL legend-hood with the all-time record, mirroring what Gordie Howe did for him when he broke the record in 1994.
Gretzky had this to say about following the journey along:
"The integrity of the game," Gretzky said. "When I was breaking Gordie Howe's record, he was there. And I said two years ago that if Alex gets close to my record, I'll be here. That's the National Hockey League, right? (Jean) Beliveau to Howe, (Bobby) Orr, (Mario) Lemieux, (Mark) Messier, you pass it down.

If somebody breaks Alex's record, I hope Alex is there to shake his hand. But, right now, I hope Alex enjoys it and he deserves all the credit and accolades he's getting."

Gretzky then revealed wise words his late father Walter told him after passing Howe's then 802-goal record:
"My dad told me that same night, 'Be as proud of the guy that breaks your record,'" Gretzky said.

While Ovechkin hasn't passed Gretzky yet, it's on the near horizon, and we hope to see the Great One beaming as the Great Eight makes hockey history.
What a time it is to be a hockey fan!
