The Canucks may or may not make the playoffs in 2025, but regardless, their GM has thrown Elias Pettersson under the bus with his comments on the off-season.
The Vancouver Canucks 2024/25 season has been nothing short of a rollercoaster, and while the Stanley Cup Playoffs are still looming, their General Manager is already looking towards the summer.
One of the teams biggest needs is at the centre position, and despite having Elias Pettersson leading the way at the top of the lineup, Patrik Allvin makes it clear that they'll need to fix the position in the off-season.
The Miller trade did bring in Filip Chytil, but it still remains an organizational priority this offseason to seek out another age-appropriate center.
Yeah, definitely we'll do that in the offseason, whether that's through trade or free-agent signing.
Allvin notes that the team could look to add pieces through free agency or the trade market, and given the top centres in FA are Sam Bennett, John Tavares, Claude Giroux and Brock Nelson among others, trades may be their best option to get things done.
While Allvin didn't specifically say they're looking to get a 1C to demote Pettersson, the issues that he's had on the ice this season are something the front office can't overlook, and with the team still having good talent around him, landing another star would be a big help.
We will no doubt learn move of Allvin's plans when free agency draws closer, but at this point it's undoubtedly a position they need to improve in, with the team running Pius Suter and Teddy Bleuger as 2 and 3C on Tuesday, so expect them to be very aggressive in looking to upgrade the team after the departure of J.T. Miller this season.
