The Washington Capitals are on pace to land the No. 1 seed in
the Eastern Conference, but all season long, the biggest story has been Alex Ovechkin's chase to be the top goal scorer in NHL history.
It was a long shot that he could do it in 2024/25 when the season began, but now he sits just 8 goals back of Wayne Gretzky with 15 games remaining on the schedule, with many believing he can now achieve history.
However, coach Spencer Carbery has recently revealed that they'll look to load manage some of their players down the stretch, noting that he wants to get two intriguing players back into the lineup for some games.
The bigger concern for me right now is trying to get some games for (Alex) Alexeyev and (Dylan) McIlrath and how that works they haven't played in so long. I would be shocked if those guys weren't playing down the stretch here.
It appears as though Ovechkin isn't in the plans however, as Carbery joked that he highly doubts No. 8 would agree to sit in the press box even if he suggested the idea.
Can you imagine if I did that? If O is still chasing the record, I doubt he'll be sitting in section 304.
Recently, Ovechkin also became the third leading hitter in NHL history as well, and with the goal record in sight, it's safe to say that he's establishing himself as one of the best players we've ever seen on the ice.
Ultimately, there's no chance that the Capitals would pull Ovechkin later in the year, and while he could potentially sit out a few games for rest if he passes the record with some games left in hand, at this point in time, he and the team are motivated to break Gretzky's record in 2024/25.
