Original-six team linked to Elias Pettersson by top insider

Last season was one of, if not the worst in Elias Pettersson's NHL career, but in 2025/26, the former No. 5 overall draft pick has managed to turn things around completely on both ends of the ice.

In 40 games played, Pettersson has posted 13 goals and 29 points, and while he's not back on pace to match his career high of 102 points from their 2022/23 campaign, he's back to being a No. 1 centre in the National Hockey League.

Despite his downturn in production, Pettersson is still a very attractive name on the trade market, with many teams likely to be in the market for an upgrade in their top-six.

According to NHL Insider Frank Seravalli on the latest episode of Canucks Central , the Detroit Red Wings are one team to watch out for in Pettersson sweepstakes, with the team having a solid amount of future assets and a major need in the 2C role.

As of late, the team were in on the Rasmus Andersson sweepstakes, showing a major desire to make an upgrade at the trade deadline, but with the team wanting to add to their forward group as well, Pettersson could be an option.

Ultimately though, if this team is to take a major leap forward, there are a few holes that they're looking to fill, so expect them to be in on more than just Pettersson in the coming months.
