St. Louis Blues make coaching changes, 848-game NHL veteran Steve Ott given new role

Steve Ott has been a key piece of the Blues coaching staff, and now, the former NHL veteran is set to take over the AHL's Springfield Thunderbirds as Head Coach.
The St. Louis Blues have undergone many changes in recent years, and with the team struggling again in 2025/26, it appears that more change is on the way, with the team expected to make some big time trades ahead of the 2026 trade deadline.
This comes less than 12 months after the team made a coaching change, bringing in former Boston Bruins bench boss Jim Montgomery, and now, they've changed things up once more.
Steve Ott to take over the AHL's Head Coach role
According to reports, the team have now made an official change in the American Hockey League, naming 848 game NHL veteran Steve Ott as Head Coach of their AHL affiliate the Springfield Thunderbirds.
Ott has been with the Blues organization as an assistant since way back in 2017 following his retirement the season prior, and was a key member of their coaching staff when they shockingly went on to win the Stanley Cup in 2019.
Still, an assistant departing the NHL for a role in the AHL, even a Head Coach role is almost unheard of, but given how important he is to the organization, the team clearly see this as a positive move for the veteran coach.
Ultimately, it's unlikely to last beyond this season, but the team likely wanted someone they could trust in that role, so for at least the remainder of 2025/26, Ott will be in charge down in the AHL.
