The 2026 Winter Classic drew immense criticism from the hockey world, but in 2027, we'll see another unique event involving the NHL's newest team.
The NHL's Winter Classic is one of the marquee events on the calendar, and given how great everything looks and how much of a hit the event has been in the past, the league has put a lot of stock in it.
This season however, things couldn't have been any different, as the league drew immense criticism for taking the event to Florida, with many labelling it as not a Winter Classic, with the viewership struggles backing up that view.
Central Division rivals to do battle in the 2027 Winter Classic
That doesn't mean the NHL will stop trying however, and with so many unique venues as potential hosts of the next event, fans will still be excited if the league can get it right.
Now, we know who will be competing in the 2027 event, with the Colorado Avalanche set to take on the NHL's newest team, their Central Division rival the Utah Mammoth, who will be competing in their first marquee event.
The event will take place in Utah at the University of Utah's Rice-Eccles Stadium, which has a capacity of 51,000, meaning that we should see plenty of new fans in the stadium as the league look to continue growing the game in Utah and especially Salt Lake City.
On paper, this has the makings of a classic event, especially with the likes of Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar to market the event around, and given that we will be getting the 'winter' back into the Winter Classic, it's safe to say that the NHL made the right call in this scenario.
