Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews was honoured by former captain Mats Sundin, who he recently passed in total goals scored in a Toronto Maple Leafs sweater.

There is a new all-time goal scorer while wearing a Toronto Maple Leafs sweater, and it's current captain Auston Matthews.
Matthews recently scored the 422nd goal of his career, all in a Leafs sweater, passing the mark of 420 goals in a Leafs sweater set by former captain Mats Sundin.
Sundin recently made an appearance at Scotiabank Arena for the special pregame ceremony to honour Matthews, which the current Leafs captain greatly appreciates.
All of it means a lot. It's special to wear this jersey. It's an absolute honour. And you know, to have Mats come in, to have so many players before us that have paved the way and worn this jersey is very special, and I'm very appreciative. - Auston Matthews

It took Sundin 981 career games with the Maple Leafs to score 420 goals, and it took Matthews just 665 games to reach 422 goals, which he joked about.
I thought it would take a few more years, but he's a great goal scorer. Kidding aside, records are made to be broken, and what a treat for the Maple Leafs fan base to have a superstar like Auston, one of the league's absolute premier players and an even better person.

He's a great leader. The way he handles the hardest hockey market in Toronto, representing the Maple Leafs. He does it with grace, and I'm very glad for him. - Mats Sundin

Auston Matthews' Goal Scoring Abilities Were Obvious From His First Game

Matthews, who was taken by the Leafs with the first overall pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, scored four goals in his very first NHL game in October of 2016 against the divisional foe Ottawa Senators.
He would score 40 goals overall in his first year, and has now become the best goal scorer in Maple Leafs history.
So far this year, Matthews has 34 points (21G, 13A).
