Toronto Maple Leafs fire coach after string of losses
Marc Savard was fired today by Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving from his role as an assistant coach on Craig Berube's staff.
It's the end of the line for Toronto Maple Leafs assistant coach Marc Savard, who was terminated today by general manager Brad Treliving.
Savard's last game as a Maple Leafs assistant coach was yesterday in
his team's 5-1 loss against the Dallas Stars in Texas.
Savard was tasked with running Toronto's power play, which is currently ranked dead last in the NHL at under 14%.
Per analyst Pierre LeBrun, the current plan of the Maple Leafs is not to immediately bring in a replacement for Savard, but that could change in time.
Doesn't sound like the Leafs are bringing in someone to replace Marc Savard for the moment. Going to go in house for now. Obviously that's subject to change. - Pierre LeBrun
Marc Savard Had A Long NHL Playing Career With Multiple Teams
Before he got into coaching, Savard was known as one of the NHL's best passers and setup men.
He was taken with the 91st overall pick by the New York Rangers in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, and would go on to play for several clubs, including the Calgary Flames, Atlanta Thrashers, and Boston Bruins.
With Boston, his career would be endangered by the predatory hit he took in March of 2010 against Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke.
He last played in 2010-11, skating in just 25 games. He finished his NHL career with 706 points (207G, 499A) in 807 games.
He was hired as an assistant on Craig Berube's staff in the summer of 2024 after they moved on from Sheldon Keefe.
