Pete DeBoer personally reaches out to Craig Berube amid coaching change rumours in Toronto

The Toronto Maple Leafs have had a very inconsistent start to the 2025/26 NHL season, and heading into the holiday break, this was a team that clearly needed a major reset.

They began the next part of the season with a massive victory in the Battle of Ontario over the Ottawa Senators, and now, they're looking forward, but that hasn't stopped speculation over their future.

One consistent rumour has emerged since the team parted ways with assistant coach Marc Savard, with many believing that Head Coach Craig Berube could be next on the chopping block.

Now, Elliotte Friedman has reported that following speculation over Peter DeBoer potentially taking Berube's job, the former Golden Knights and Stars Head Coach reached out to him personally.

It's not 100% clear exactly what was said, but the message, which didn't come from DeBoer directly confirmed that he wasn't coming for Berube's job, and that he has no intentions of taking a role in Toronto.

That, of course, could change if Berube is ousted as coach in Toronto, but as of right now, DeBoer isn't gunning for that job, and if the Maple Leafs can turn things around, they may not even move on from Berube.

Ultimately though, this has been a lackluster season from the Maple Leaf, and if things continue this way, it's a matter of when, not if Berube is fired, and at that time, DeBoer may become a genuine option.
