NHL analyst floats Morgan Rielly buyout as Toronto Maple Leafs face big decision

Tonight, NHL analyst Nick Kypreos has discussed the possibility of the Toronto Maple Leafs buying out or trading away defenseman Morgan Rielly.
The Toronto Maple Leafs struggled during the 2025-26 season missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2016.
The failure in Toronto led General Manager Brad Treliving to be fired as fans called for major changes to get the team back on track.
Now, insiders and analysts believe defenseman Morgan Rielly’s days in Toronto could be numbered as he could be a casualty of the next shakeup.
NHL analyst discusses potential Morgan Rielly buyout
During a recent Sportsnet segment, NHL analyst Nick Kypreos spoke about the rumors surrounding Rielly’s future in Toronto.
He first admitted that a buy out for Rielly remains unlikely unless the new General Manager takes a stand.
With that said, Kypreos believes the Maple Leafs would be willing and even prefer to trade Rielly to a new destination this summer.

Rielly has spent his entire 13 year career with the Maple Leafs climbing the record books in multiple categories for defensemen.
It seems that even if Rielly’s time in Toronto is up the organization wants to do right by him and send him to a good situation moving forward.
As a new General Manager is hired by the Maple Leafs this will be a situation to revisit as whoever takes over will have to make a decision on Rielly.
