Maple Leafs top college prospect Nick Moldenhauer rejects contract offer, likely heading to free agency

A new report has confirmed that Toronto Maple Leafs standout college prospect Nick Moldenhauer is unlikely to sign with the team this summer.
With the NCAA season coming to an end for most teams many of the top prospects from around college hockey are signing with teams.
The Michigan Wolverines recently fell short in the Frozen Four and Maple Leafs prospect Nick Moldenhauer was expected to join the organization once Michigan’s season ended.
However, a new report has suggested that will not be the case as Moldenhauer has turned down a contract offer from the Maple Leafs and decided to return to Michigan for his senior season.
Maple Leafs in danger of losing top college prospect Nick Moldenhauer
According to Joshua Kloke of The Athletic, Moldenhauer is expected to return to Michigan unless something suddenly changes.
Right now, it sounds unlikely Nick Moldenhauer will be signing with the Maple Leafs this year.
Things can change but it seems like the 2022 third-round pick wants to return to the University of Michigan for another season of development.
With Moldenhauer returning to Michigan he will now hold control of his future NHL home.
The Maple Leafs will lose exclusive signing rights to Moldenhauer in August of next year meaning next summer he could sign with any team.
It remains unclear whether or not Moldenhauer will take this option but clearly he does not see a role with the Maple Leafs over the next year.
If the Maple Leafs do not sign Moldenhauer, they will be losing out on one of their organization’s top prospects in a time where Toronto needs young stars coming up.
