After the Edmonton Oilers waived defenseman Troy Stecher, he's now found a new home in a Canadian market after he was claimed by the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The tenure of veteran defenseman Troy Stecher with the Edmonton Oilers has officially ended, as he was
placed on waivers and has now been subsequently claimed by a new team in a Canadien market.
Per NHL analyst Elliotte Friedman, Stecher has been claimed by the Toronto Maple Leafs:
Stecher, who has not played since the day before Halloween, had no points in six games this year in an Oilers sweater.
The Maple Leafs needed additional depth on the blue line after defenseman
Chris Tanev was lost indefinitely and placed on Injured Reserve after taking a hit from Philadelphia Flyers forward
Matvei Michkov.
The Oilers had put Stecher on waivers after they saw there was no clear path to him having a long career in an Edmonton sweater, and wanted to give him a chance to land on his feet elsewhere.
Troy Stecher Has Played In 566 Career NHL Games With Multiple Clubs
Stecher was never drafted into the NHL after playing at the University of North Dakota, and signed an entry level contract with the Vancouver Canucks.
He would play in Vancouver until he chose to sign with the Detroit Red Wings in late 2020, a two year contract. He would play in Detroit until he was on the move again, getting traded to the Los Angeles Kings at the 2022 Trade Deadline.
Stecher has since played for the Arizona Coyotes, Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers.
He has 117 points (22G, 95A) in 566 career NHL games.
