Per a new report from NHL analyst Chris Johnston, the Maple Leafs cancelled plans to acquire an unnamed player in June in order to have room to sign Brad Marchand.

There were reportedly big plans on the part of the Toronto Maple Leafs this summer, which reportedly included trying to sign Brad Marchand, who had just helped the divisional foe Florida Panthers repeat as Stanley Cup champions.
It was Marchand who helped the Panthers beat the Maple Leafs in the second round, and it was yet another Game 7 win that Marchand helped his team enjoy over Toronto.
But Marchand did not join the Leafs and instead stayed with the Panthers on a lengthy extension that takes him to the age of 43.
Per a new report from NHL analyst Chris Johnston, the Maple Leafs passed on plans to acquire an unnamed player during the summer so that they could have room to sign Marchand.
Chris Johnston: League sources familiar with the situation say that Toronto even passed on the possibility of acquiring another player in a June trade in order to protect the cap space that would have been needed to bring in Brad Marchand - The Athletic (1/6)
So far this year for the Panthers, Marchand has 46 points (23G, 23A) in 41 games.

Brad Marchand Re-Signed With The Panthers For Six Years

Marchand did not join the Leafs or go back to the Boston Bruins, where he played the first several years of his NHL career and won a Stanley Cup as a rookie in 2011.
Instead, the Panthers raised eyebrows everywhere by signing Marchand to a six year deal that takes him through the age of 43, leaving many to wonder whether or not he'll actually play that long.
The Panthers also managed to sign UFAs Sam Bennett and Aaron Ekblad in addition to Marchand.
