Tonight, in a new interview former Maple Leafs goalie Jack Campbell opened up about his time in Toronto and the potential culture problems within the organization and the media.
The Toronto Maple Leafs endured an awful season in 2025-26 missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in a decade which led to a major overhaul from top to bottom.
After the season ended, reports emerged of chaos and frustration within the Maple Leafs locker room dating back to before star Mitch Marner left for the Vegas Golden Knights.
With a new management team in charge, a former Maple Leaf Jack Campbell spoke about the locker room dynamics during his time in Toronto from 2020 to 2022.
Jack Campbell speaks out on Maple Leafs culture issues
During a recent interview, Campbell spoke about playing in big markets including Toronto and Edmonton.
Campbell admitted he loved the pressure and the dynamics of playing in a tough market.
My answer may sound interesting, but it's the truth - I was obsessed with playing in a Canadian market. Playing in Toronto was the coolest thing in the world. Waking up on game day and opening up the blinds, it just felt like Hockey Night in Canada every single game. Then Edmonton, another massive market, an amazing team, but the hard part about it isn't exactly what people think. Yes, it's a lot of eyes on you and media and positives, negatives, things like that, but for me it was always what's going on in between my ears. The media or the comments on social media would never be as bad as when I talked to myself. So, in that regard, playing in a Canadian market was never actually that big of an issue.
Additionally, Campbell admitted that his time in Toronto was the most difficult of his career but ended up being the most rewarding and helped him move forward.
I met my wife there, the friendships I have there are incredible. Some of the hardest things I've gone through off the ice were in Toronto, but looking back it just adds to the power of what Toronto means to me because I was able to identify things there and begin to work on it.
It seems that Campbell does not believe there were or are any problems with the core group in Toronto but did shine light on exactly what it takes to thrive in a big Canadian market in one of the toughest positions in all of sports.
