Nikita Kucherov's trade list receives some clarity from Pierre LeBrun

According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, the Lightning star's trade protection is far from a total veto.

That distinction shapes everything that follows. A full no-trade clause hands a player a veto over all 31 other clubs. Kucherov's version works differently, limiting Tampa Bay to a short menu of teams he has approved in advance.

LeBrun also confirmed that Kucherov and his agent, Dan Milstein, have requested a move, though no preferred destination has been shared publicly. Elliotte Friedman first reported that the winger told the Lightning he will not re-sign.

Ten approved clubs out of 31 possible partners leaves roughly one-third of the league in play. That is a workable pool, but also a narrow one for general manager Julien BriseBois, who will demand a return that reflects a superstar's value.

Every team on that list must also have the cap space and assets to make the math work.

A player of Kucherov's caliber carries a hefty salary, and Tampa Bay will want quality players, picks or prospects coming back. Fewer bidders usually means less competition, which can pull the price down.

Kucherov does hold leverage. He is entering the final year of his contract and has made his intentions clear. If Tampa Bay waits too long, it risks losing him in free agency with nothing to show for it.

The ten teams on that list are the next mystery. Once those names surface, expect every contender with cap flexibility to be tied to the Lightning star, and expect BriseBois to run a tight, quiet process.

BriseBois has proven he is unafraid to make audacious deals, so a blockbuster should not be ruled out as this saga unfolds.
