Auston Matthews has 23 points through 15 games, and Maple Leafs fans can feel something different about their captain right now.
Something feels different about Matthews right now, and Leafs fans have clearly noticed.
Through 15 games, the Toronto captain has 10 goals, 13 assists and 23 points, plus a +6 rating and nine power play points.
The start has been loud from day one.
Matthews scored against Ottawa on opening weekend, then put up a four point night against Nashville that ended with an overtime winner.
He played his 700th NHL game in Columbus and marked it with a goal and an assist.
Milestones keep piling up
On Monday in Calgary, Matthews picked up the 800th point of his NHL career with an assist.
He got there in 703 games, which makes him the fastest player in franchise history to reach 800 points.
Only four players have ever done it in a Leafs uniform, and he's now one of them.
He hasn't slowed down away from home either.
Matthews has a point in each of Toronto's first seven road games, and William Nylander is the only other Leafs player to start a season that way in the past 35 years.
On Wednesday in Seattle he scored with the goalie pulled and 1:30 left to tie it at 4-4, then finished with a goal and two assists in a 5-4 loss.
Why this start matters
Toronto hasn't been perfect as a team, so having its best player producing at this level matters.
Rookie Gavin McKenna has added some spark too, but Matthews is the one driving the offence night after night.
Even the hockey media has noticed, as some are teasing a career changing decision from the star centre, though what's actually showing up on the ice is a player who looks completely locked in.
The real test comes in November, but right now Matthews looks unstoppable.
