Darren Dreger says the Red Wings have offered Simon Edvinsson one, two, five and seven year deals, but the money isn't close, and the December 1 clock is ticking.

The Detroit Red Wings have thrown just about every contract length at Simon Edvinsson, and they still don't have a signature.
According to TSN insider Darren Dreger, the problem isn't the years.
It's the dollars.
Dreger reported that Detroit has offered one year, two years, five years and seven years so far, but the money clearly isn't there.
That covers everything from a short bridge to the maximum term the 23-year-old defenseman can sign for.
Re Simon Edvinsson: "The Red Wings have offered contracts to date of 1 year, 2 years, 5 years, and 7 years, but clearly the money isn't there."

Earlier in this standoff, the Red Wings were reportedly pushing for a bridge deal while Edvinsson's camp wanted either two years or the full seven.
Now Detroit has worked through the whole menu and the two sides are still apart.

The money gap is the real issue

Edvinsson is reportedly seeking somewhere between $9 million and $11 million per season depending on the length, while the Red Wings have been hesitant to go past the $8.55 million Moritz Seider makes.
That gap looks like the entire story right now.
Dreger also made it clear Detroit is willing to wait this out, which tells you the team doesn't feel any rush to overpay.

Why December 1 matters

Edvinsson needs a deal done by December 1 to be eligible to play this season, and he hasn't played a game yet.
The sixth overall pick in 2021 is a big piece of Detroit's blue line, so the pressure is building on both sides.
Dreger added that the San Jose Sharks are most definitely interested, and upwards of 10 teams have checked in on him.
That's a lot of leverage if this ends in a trade.
Either Detroit finally meets the number, or Edvinsson changes teams.
With the calendar shrinking, one of those has to happen soon.
