Nikita Kucherov demands a trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning

The bombshell is attributed to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, and neither the player nor the team has publicly confirmed it yet.

If true, it is a seismic shift for a franchise built around its superstar winger. Kucherov, 33, is the reigning Hart Trophy winner after piling up 44 goals and 130 points, second in the NHL.

He is playing out the final year of an eight-year, $76 million contract and is set to reach unrestricted free agency on July 1, 2027.

Extension talks have been open since July 1 without a breakthrough. Last month, TSN's Chris Johnston reported that Kucherov's side was looking at a figure around $20 million per season on a six-year term.

The tension follows four straight first-round playoff exits, the latest ending with Kucherov held pointless in the final three games against Montreal.

Kucherov holds a modified no-trade clause tied to a 10-team list, which gives him a say in where he lands.

Because he is a pending free agent, his trade value is murky, yet Pierre LeBrun noted in May that plenty of teams would line up to talk if the Lightning opened the market.

A Hart-caliber scorer is not easy to find, and contenders with cap space will pounce.
