Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson will reportedly play his final year in Pittsburgh after latest report

The reason is not the money.

Karlsson turned in 15 goals and 51 assists across 75 games last season, a plus-8 year that helped drag Pittsburgh back into the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2022.

The Penguins cannot price a 37-year-old defenseman until they know whether a 39-year-old captain is returning, retiring, or asking for a move.

Karlsson is not being judged as a player right now.

He is being held as a variable inside a decision that ultimately belongs to Sidney Crosby.

San Jose retained 13.04 percent of Karlsson's $11.5 million cap hit in the 2023 trade, leaving Pittsburgh carrying about $10 million.

That subsidy dies with the contract.

Any new deal is funded entirely by the Penguins.

An extension at $8 million saves Pittsburgh roughly $2 million against today's books, not the windfall a pay cut implies.

That is the honest math behind the caution from Josh Yohe.

Pittsburgh has not decided what the 2027-28 season is meant to be.

Until Sidney Crosby answers that question, Erik Karlsson's next contract cannot be written by anyone.
