After moving to the St. Louis Blues on an offer sheets deal, Philip Broberg embarrassed Edmonton Oilers general manager Stan Bowman with his superstar performance against the Montreal Canadiens Tuesday night.

Following their defeat in Game 7 of the 2023-2024 season Stanley Cup Finals, the Edmonton Oilers had to face several difficult decisions regarding the short-term future of the team.
As if this tough loss and next steps were not quite difficult enough, general manger Stan Bowman was met with an even more pressing situation regarding two skaters who had yet to play their first 100 NHL games.
This, of course, was the St. Louis Blues' infamous move for defenseman Philip Broberg and forward Dylan Holloway, which ended in Bowman's decision against matching their offer sheets and consequently seeing them leave.
Several months into their apparent breakout seasons and just weeks away from the playoffs, the Oilers GM finally spoke up about this seemingly myopic decision.
During a recent edition of Sportsnet After Hours, Bowman asserted that had Edmonton matched St. Louis' offer, they would have had to let go of a player too valuable to their current roster.
"We wouldn't have the team we have now if we would've matched either one of those offers. We would've had to have gotten rid of a pretty core player. Simply, the math didn't work.

It's not like we didn't like the players or didn't think they could be good players for us, but when you look at the salary cap, that was what we're studying, was 'Is there any possible way to match either or both?'"
However, after the St. Louis Blues home game on Tuesday night, Bowman may have a better reason to regret this choice.
In their game against the Montreal Canadiens, Holloway scored a goal and an assist, while Broberg had a superstar performance with a goal and three assists for a four-point game, leading the team to a decisive 1-6 victory.
Now holding onto a seven-game winning streak, the Blues are in the second Western Conference Wild Card spot, and only two points behind the Minnesota Wild, and four behind Stan Bowman's Edmonton Oilers.
Should Broberg and St. Louis keep up their momentum, they could very well prove a scary team in the upcoming Stanley Cup playoffs.
