Marc-Andre Fleury's career started in Pittsburgh, and over two decades later, he's back in the black and gold for one final run with the Penguins.
Back in 2003, the Pittsburgh Penguins used the No. 1 overall pick on goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, and it appears it turned out to be the right move for the organization.
Since then, he would go on to break many NHL records, helping the Penguins to three Stanley Cup's in that time, and after departing the team, he announced his retirement following the 2024/25.
One more run with the Penguins for No. 29
However, teases began on Thursday that Fleury may not be done after all, and on Friday, the organization announced that Fleury is back on a PTO, and he will play in an exhibition game for the team on September 27.
It's likely to be one final game in a Penguins uniform for Flower, but there's a chance that this could motivate him into giving it one final season, with Kyle Dubas revealing why the team made this move.
"The entire Penguins organization is honored to welcome Marc-Andre Fleury back to the ice in Pittsburgh. This past year everyone witnessed how beloved and respected Marc is in the game of hockey, but the adoration goes beyond his accolades and career. Marc means so much to our team, our fans and the City of Pittsburgh because of the person he is and the example he set. The Penguins feel he and his family are most-deserving of this opportunity to celebrate this full-circle moment back where it all started in front of the black and gold faithful."
For now, it appears to be one final game to send Fleury into retirement as a member of the Penguins, and for those in Pittsburgh that saw him for over 13 years, this will be the perfect opportunity to say farewell.
