Four years. That's how long Brady Tkachuk reportedly told his Ottawa teammates he had no intention of re-signing, according to Bruce Garrioch on Sens 1-on-1.
In 2022, Matthew Tkachuk reportedly told Calgary he had no plans to re-sign long-term with the Flames, with Florida on his short list of preferred destinations.
The Panthers made the trade happen, and two Stanley Cup championships followed in 2024 and 2025.
Now Brady has run the same play from Ottawa.

Florida made another blockbuster offer - the ninth and 25th picks in the 2026 draft plus additional future assets - and landed the second Tkachuk.
Florida's blueprint isn't luck
The Panthers have now built their core twice by acquiring stars who forced their way out of franchises they no longer believed in.
Both deals happened because the player controlled the destination, and both players chose Florida.
Bill Zito identified this window before anyone else did. He built a two-time championship team by positioning Florida as the destination that disgruntled stars actually want to reach.
Brady posted 22 goals and 59 points in 60 games this past season before Ottawa was swept by Carolina in the first round.
He carries genuine production into a Panthers team that finished 40-38-4 and missed the playoffs entirely in 2026.
What Ottawa should be asking
The "unacceptable behavior" label puts the story squarely on Brady. The more useful question is why this particular situation keeps landing at other franchises and never at Florida.
Both Tkachuks made the same call when given the chance to pick a destination. The Panthers were the answer both times.
Ottawa gets picks and Florida gets a Tkachuk. Their second Tkachuk, that is.
