Sergei Bobrovsky was ready to stay in Florida for a discount. He just needed one thing Bill Zito would not put on paper.

Insider Daria Tuboltseva reported Bobrovsky agreed to Florida's final offer of $6 million per year over two seasons, but Panthers GM Bill Zito would only offer a partial no-trade clause instead of the full protection Bobrovsky wanted.
That single sticking point ended the negotiation. Toronto had no such hesitation, and Leafs GM John Chayka reportedly moved quickly once Bobrovsky's terms reached him, saying the team had roughly seven million dollars in free cap space to offer.

What Toronto Gave Him

Bobrovsky signed a three-year, twenty-one million dollar deal with the Maple Leafs, carrying a seven million dollar cap hit.
The 37-year-old posted a 27-23-1 record with an .877 save percentage in 52 games with Florida last season. Chayka called the addition a difference maker for the crease, saying Bobrovsky brings stability, consistency and durability, and that his resume could ultimately be the best at the position in NHL history.
For Toronto, the clause is a calculated bet. A 37-year-old goalie with total trade protection is a risk if his play declines, but the Leafs are banking on immediate stability after years of shaky goaltending in the crease during the playoffs.

What Florida Loses

The Panthers lose a two-time Stanley Cup champion and a locker room anchor for what amounted to a one-year age gap and a clause disagreement.
Bobrovsky owns 456 career regular-season wins, seventh all-time among goaltenders, and 61 playoff wins, tied for 15th most in Stanley Cup history.
Losing that experience without a return, over a contract clause rather than money, will sting in Sunrise for a while.
