Tye Kartye has plenty of potential at the NHL level, but after being waived by Seattle, he's found a new home with the New York Rangers.
The Seattle Kraken have made some very interesting prospect choices in recent years, and back in 2022, they found forward Tye Kartye as an un-drafted forward out of the Ontario Hockey League.
Early on he was very impactful in the AHL, tallying 57 points across 72 games in his first season, and while he's shown immense potential in the NHL, he's yet to turn that into production.
As a result, the team officially placed the 24-year old on waivers on Thursday in the hopes that he could simply pass through and head back to the AHL with the Coachella Valley Firebirds.
Rangers claim Kartye on waivers
There was expected to be plenty of interest in him on waivers, and unsurprisingly, on Friday he was officially claimed, with the New York Rangers stepping up to the plate to land the 24-year old.
In 40 games this season, Kartye has just 3 goals and 8 points after putting up a combined 33 points over the past two years, and while he may never turn into a star, as a solid 24-year old with potential, this was a low-risk, potentially high-reward move for the Rangers.
Only time will tell if Kartye can turn into a solid player at the NHL level, and while the odds of him becoming an impact player are low, this was a no-brainer for GM Chris Drury and New York.
